Preliminary Test
For safety reasons, a preliminary test was carried out to establish safe conditions for the performance of the definitive test. A very small sample (about 10 mg) of the test item was subjected to heating without confinement in a Bunsen flame.
Thermal Sensitivity (Effect of a flame)
The test item was filled into the tube in three equal increments of about 9 cm3, each increment being gently consolidated by applying a force of 80 N to the surface. Care was taken to avoid bubbles during filling.
Heating was applied at a fixed rate by four standard gas burners located around the steel tube. The burners were adjusted so that the tip of the internal blue core of the flame almost touches the tube.
Two series of three tests were performed, the first series using a nozzle-plate with a hole 6 mm diameter and the second series using a nozzle-plate with hole of 2 mm diameter.
The three tests with 6 mm diameter orifice plate showed similar behaviour:
After about 59 s, flame more intense;
After about 72 s intense phase characterized by generation of smoke. The sample was expelled from the orifice;
End of intense phase after about 175 seconds;
End of all phenomena after about 258 seconds.
The three tests with 2 mm diameter orifice plate showed a similar behaviour to those with 6 mm diameter orifice plate but with a more intense flame.
During the six tests performed on the sample, no explosion occurred during 5 minutes.
The test result is considered negative.
Mechanical Sensitivity (Shock)
The test item in powdered form sieved all that passes through the sieve mesh 0.5mm was placed in a die device, with a cylindrical measure of 40 mm3, which was then centred on a steel anvil. Six tests were performed by dropping a guided 10 kg steel hammer weight from a height of 0.4 m (40 J) onto the die device containing the sample.
No evidence of ignition, explosion or decomposition was obtained during the series of six tests at 40 J performed on the sample.
The test result is considered negative.
Mechanical Sensitivity (Friction)
An aliquot of 10 mm3of test item sieved all that passes through the sieve mesh 0.5mm were placed onto a standard porcelain plate, and brought into contact with a weighted, standard porcelain peg by moving the plate, to and fro, over a distance of 10 mm once in 0.44 seconds.
A series of six tests were performed with a 360 N loading.
No explosion was obtained during the tests (crepitation and/or a report or bursting into flame are equivalent to explosion).
The test result is considered negative.
