Description of key information
In an acute algae study with AD-1000, both the 72-h EC50 for cell growth inhibition and for growth rate reduction exceeded 0.2 mg/l, i.e. the average concentration measured in a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/l. The NOEC for both cell growth inhibition and growth rate reduction was 0.2 mg/l. This concentration largely exceeds the water solubility limit of less than 0.0007 mg/l.

A combined limit/range-finding test was performed with exponentially growing algal cultures exposed to a blank-control and a WAF prepared at 100 mg/l in the limit test and WAFs prepared at 1.0 and 10 mg/l in the combined range- finding test. The total test period was 72 hours and the initial algal cell density was 104 cells/ml.
Samples for analytical confirmation of actual exposure concentrations were taken at the start, after 24 hours and at the end of the test. Mean recoveries of the procedural recovery samples were 60% and 48%. These relatively low recoveries were probably caused by the poor solubility of the test substance.
Analysis of the samples taken from the WAF prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/l showed that the measured concentration varied between 0.07 and 0.43 mg/l during the 72-hour test period. The relative large variation was considered to be due to testing above the solubility limit, which was determined to be less than 0.7 µg/l (see water solubility). The average concentration to which algae were exposed in the WAF at 100 mg/l was calculated to be 0.2 mg/l, being the indicative mean of three individual measurements. No inhibition of cell growth or reduction of growth rate was recorded at any of the concentrations of the test substance.
Hence, both the EC50 for cell growth inhibition (EBC50: 0 -72h) and the EC50 for growth rate reduction (ERC50: 0-72h) exceeded 0.2 mg/l, i.e. the average concentration measured in a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/l.
The NOEC for both cell growth inhibition and growth rate reduction was 0.2 mg/l. This concentration largely exceeds the water solubility limit of less than 0.0007 mg/l.
In conclusion; due to the extremely low solubility of the test substance in water, concentration levels that might be toxic for algae could not be reached, not even at two orders of magnitude above the maximum solubility.
