Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Octafluoropropane is essentially non-toxic, however, as a compressed gas it will cause cooling as it evaporate which could lead to frost bite in extreme cases.

Fire-fighting measures

Non-flammable; all types of extinguishers are suitable.

Keep cylinders of octafluoropropane cool; be aware that cylinder may develop very high pressure when heated

Very toxic fumes from decomposition products, including hydrofluoride and carbon monoxide - breathing apparatus required

Accidental release measures

As octafluoropropane is a gas it will quickly escape into the atmosphere. Act promptly to stop or reduce any release as soon as possible.

Handling and storage

Store in a cool, dry place.

Compressed gas will cause cooling when vaporising; cold protection required

Use in contained systems that will prevent any leakage to the environment.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Standard protection when handling a gas should be used.

Use eye protection.

Use is sealed systems.

If the gas is compressed, wear gloves to protect against cold if the material is evaporating.

Stability and reactivity

Material is extremely stable under most conditions.

May react with alkali metals.

High temperatures (>400°C) will give highly toxic decomposition products.

Disposal considerations

Material can be incinerated but a scrubber must be fitted to remove toxic decomposition products.
