Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an appropriate national standard method. It was not compliant with GLP.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: ECSIS Burning Test
GLP compliance:
no
Test procedure:
burning time (test type not further specified)
Remarks on result:
other: Deposited dust showed no combustion. There was no scorch upon contact with the Pt-wire. The powder melts and evaporates leaving a white solidified melt as residue.
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The substance was found to not ignite in a burning test with deposited dust in a study conducted according to an appropriate national standard method but not under GLP.

Description of key information

Flammability: Non flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The substance was found to not ignite in two burning tests with deposited dust in a study conducted according to an appropriate national standard method but not under GLP. A secondary source to which reliability could not be assigned also indicated that the substance is non flammable.

Experience in handling and use indicates that the substance is not flammable in contact with air or water and testing for these endpoints is not necessary.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is not classified for flammability according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. This is on the basis of burning test studies which indicate that citric acid does not ignite under the conditions of the study. Also, citric acid is not classified for substances or mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gas and for pyrophoricity on the basis of structural examination. In addition, experience in handling and use indicates that the submission substance should not be classified for this hazard.
