EC PHYSICO/CHEMICAL TEST A10, FLAMMABILITY OF SOLIDS

Rate of burning (over 200 mm) : > 240 seconds

From the preliminary screening test the sample was seen to burn in a time > 4 minutes and therefore no further testing is required. Therefore the substance can be considered as non-flammable.

Comments:

The sample melted to a clear liquid, before igniting with a small, blue, non-sustaining flame. This reaction did not propagate along the sample strip.

No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the 3 initial tests. No spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the the fourth and final tests. The gas generated was not tested for flammability. Based on these results the substance was considered not to be flammble in contact with water.

Description of key information

Ethylene carbonate is concluded not to be pyrophoric, nor flammable nor flammable in contact with water following a series of GLP studies in accordance with EU test methods A.10, A.12 and A.13 (Baker, 2010). Besides, the substance is not considered self-heating since it has a melting point below 160°C.

Justification for classification or non-classification

A series of GLP studies in accordance with EU methods A.10, A.12 and A.13 were conducted to determine the flammable properties of ethylene carbonate. In none of these tests ethylene carbonate expressed flammable properties. Based on the outcome of these studies it can be concluded that ethylene carbonate does not fulfil the classification criteria under CLP.
