Additional information:

No animal data is available. However few human data are available. In one case report (Dooms-Goossens et al. 1995), a 43-year-old man working in the plastic industry was reported to suffer from an occupational dermatitis (weeping eczema) on the hands and forearms after being in contact with an epoxy silane compound (3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) that was contaminated with 5% v/v AGE. The man had no previous skin problems and the history of atopy was negative. After transfer to another job in the same company, the patient's dermatitis cleared. Patch testing with the patient was done with 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (contaminated with 5% v/v AGE) and with AGE alone either diluted in olive oil or acetone. Contaminated 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane yielded positive reactions down to a concentration of 1% whereas AGE resulted in positive reactions down to a concentration of 0.05%. Tests in 20 control subjects with contaminated 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimeth-oxysilane (2.5% in olive oil) were negative.

In a study with volunteers (Angelini et al., 1996), AGE (0.25 % in petrolatum) showed cross reaction in 1/10 individual previously sensitized to ortho-cresyl glycidyl ether. In another study with volunteers (Jolanki, 1991), a patch test was performed with AGE (0.25 % in petrolatum) on 15 patients suspected for occupational skin disease. 4/15 subjects showed positive reactions.

Based on the available information, AGE is considered to possess skin sensitising properties and is classified as R43 (EU) and in Cat 1 (GHS).

Migrated from Short description of key information:
