Method: other: Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex V, C2 (1984)
GLP compliance:
no
Analytical monitoring:
no
Vehicle:
no
Test organisms (species):
Daphnia magna
Details on test organisms:
The daphnids were 2 to 24 hours old.
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
no
Total exposure duration:
48 h
Post exposure observation period:
None
Hardness:
total hardness 2.7 ± 0.5 mmol/L
pH:
pH-value ranged from 7.7 to 8.3.
Salinity:
conductivity 550 - 650 muSiemens/cm
Reference substance (positive control):
not required
Duration:
48 h
Dose descriptor:
EC0
Effect conc.:
62.5 mg/L
Duration:
48 h
Dose descriptor:
EC100
Effect conc.:
250 mg/L
Duration:
48 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
98.37 mg/L
Details on results:
2-dimethylaminoethanol causes an increase of pH in the test solutions. The effect of the substance on the mobility of D. magna is probably in part due to an increase in pH.
RS-Freetext:
After 24 hours of exposure:
EC0 = 62.5 mg/L
EC50 = 105.42 mg/L
EC100 = 250 mg/L
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
Following results were achieved after exposure period of 48 hours:
EC0 = 62.5 mg/L, EC50 = 98.37 mg/L, EC100 = 250 mg/L
Executive summary:

The acute toxicity of dimethylaminoethanol towards aquatic invertebrates was determined according to Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex V, C2 (1984) with Daphnia magna as test organism. In this static freshwater test, nominal substance concentrations of 0 (control), 7.81, 15.6, 31.2, 62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg/L were tested. In the test vessels, 5 animals were exposed to 10 mL test medium for 48 hours, respectively. 4 replicates per test concentration were used. As final results, the EC0 (48 h) amounts to 62.5 mg/L while the EC50 (48 h) was determined to be 98.37 mg/L. The EC100 (48 h) was assessed to be 250 mg/L.

Additional information

The acute toxicity of dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) towards aquatic invertebrates was determined according to Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex V, C2 (1984) with Daphnia magna as test organism (BASF AG, 1988).
