Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Two reliable (Klimisch 1) studies were available. Based on the key study of Belarde (2004), the substance can be classified as readily biodegradable under the conditions of the test.

Additional information

The Klimisch 1 study of Belarde (2004) was identified as key study because it was conducted according to GLP and OECD guideline 301 B. The test was performed in two replicates and measured the percent theoretical carbon dioxide produced by propylene carbonate over a time course of 29 days. After 9 days the ThCO2 was 70.2 % and 69.3 % in replicate 1 and 2, respectively. The ThCO2 increased to 87.7 % and 83.5 % in replicate 1 and 2, respectively. These results indicate that propylene carbonate can be classified as readily biodegradable under the conditions of this test.

The Klimisch 1 supporting study of Huels (1995) is performed according to EU Method C.4 -A and determined 97 % DOC removal in 14 days with the 10-day-window criterium met, concluding ready biodegradability as well.
