No data is available for the registered substance, 2-(ethylthio)ethanol. A bacterial mutagenicity study is, however, available for the related substance, 2,2'-dithiobisethanol (CAS number 1892-29-1), which is a close structural analogue of 2 -(ethylthio)ethanol. It is considered appropriate to read across the results for 2,2'-dithiobisethanol because both are hydroxysulfides containing similar functional groups.

Justification for classification or non-classification
There is evidence for lack of genotoxicity in bacterial cells for the related substance, 2,2'-dithiobisethanol, but studies on mammalian cells are not available and no data are available from testing in vivo. It is therefore not possible to reach a conclusion on genetic toxicity for the registered substance, 2 -(ethylthio)ethanol. In vivo testing is not proposed as the substance is a strictly controlled intermediate so exposure is not expected.
