Description of key information
Cyclohexane is a highly flammable liquid (flash point: -20°C) with a self-ignition temperature of 260°C. It is a volatile liquid (vapour pressure = 12.4kPa at 24°C), the vapours can form flammable and explosive mixtures with air within the range of 1.3% to 8.4 % v/v. Cyclohexane is a static accumulator.

The Merck Index (O'Neil 2006) is a peer reviewed handbook and so can be considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint. In addition, this is the key reference in the EU RAR (2004) for cyclohexane. The supporting study (WHO ICSC, 1994) is also a peer reviewed source and reports an explosion mixture with air of 1.3 % v/v to 8.4 % v/v and supports the value reported in the key study.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Cyclohexane meets the general criteria of a flammable liquid, defined as one with a flashpoint of less than 60°C, because it has a flash point of -20°C. Due to its boiling point (BP is 80.7°C) cyclohexane also fulfils the specific criteria for a Category 2 (hazard statement of "Highly Flammable Liquid and Vapour") because it has a flash point of less than 23°C and an initial boiling point of greater than 35°C.
