Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

An OECD 216 GLP study was conducted on the effect of heptanoic acid on nitrification in soil. Heptanoic acid did not inhibit nitrification up to 300 mg/kg soil dw. NOEC is 300 mg/kg soil dw.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Long-term EC10 or NOEC for soil microorganisms:
300 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

Inhibitory effect of n-heptanoic acid on nitrification in soil was investigated according to OECD 216 guideline. Graded concentrations of heptanoic acid (0 ; 3 ; 10 ; 30 ; 100 ; 320 ; 1000 mg/kg soil dw) were tested on a soil sampled in the wild and enriched with a known amount of Medicago sativa (dry lucerne). N-NO3 concentrations in soils were analytically quantified at the start of the experiment and 28 days after incubation. No inhibitory effect was observed on nitrification up to 300 mg/kg soil dw. Inhibition occurred at 1000 mg/kg soil dw. NOEC is 300 mg/kg soil dw.
