Description of key information

No skin or eye irritation data are available for trichloro(propyl)silane. However, in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annexes VII and VIII, the in vitro and in vivo skin and eye irritation studies (required in Sections 8.1.1 and 8.1.2) do not need to be conducted as the available information indicates that the substance meets the criteria for classification as corrosive.

Additional information

Trichloro(propyl)silane very hydrolyses rapidly in contact with water and moist air, generating 3 moles of hydrochloric acid (HCl) per mole of parent material. Although no reliable in vivo irritation/corrosion studies are available, severe skin, eye and respiratory damage can be expected due to release of hydrochloric acid. This is consistent with reliable measured data for other chlorosilanes. Additional information is given in a supporting report attached to Section 13 of the IUCLID dossier (PFA, 2013r).




Justification for classification or non-classification

Trichloro(propyl)silane is classified 'Skin Corr. 1A' and 'Eye Dam. 1', with hazard statement H314 'Causes severe skin burns and eye damage’ according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. There are no specific data for respiratory irritation, however the key acute inhalation study revealed signs of respiratory irritation/corrosion. 'EUH071 Corrosive to the respiratory tract' (1272/2008) is applied in accordance with these data and those of related chlorosilane substances, based on the expected respiratory tract damage caused by the hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid.
