Additional information

The toxicity of lauric acid to microorganisms was tested in a study following DIN 38472 Part 27 (Geisel and Berger, 1998 and Kirch 1994). Pseudomonas putida was exposed to the substance for 30 minutes and the respiration rate of the bacteria was recorded. At test termination an EC10 >1000 mg/L was determined. However the test does not meet the requirements of current standard procedures due to the short exposure period. Therefore the assessment of the toxicity to microorganisms is based on a test conducted with the structural analogue octanoic acid C8 (CAS 124-07-2). Pseudomonas putida was exposed to octanoic acid in a cell multiplication inhibition test following GLP-requirements. The applied test method is similar to the ISO guideline 10712. After 18 hours of exposure an EC10 of 912 mg/L (nominal) was reported (Coenen, 1988). Both test results support the argumentation that toxic effects of lauric acid to microorganisms are not to be expected.
