Additional information

1,1-dichloro-2,2,2 -trifluoroethane (HCFC 123) is a colourless volatile liquid with a faint ethereal odour.

A melting point of -107°C and a boiling point of 28.7 °C under standard conditions are reported in a reliable handbook (Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical technology, 1991). A saturated liquid density ranging from 1481.2 kg/m3to 1456 kg/m3 was determined by Maezawa et al. (1990) in the temperature interval of 290-300 K under atmospheric pressure.

A vapour pressure of 934.56 hPa was measured at about 25 °C by Goodwin et al. (1992) by means of an ebulliometric method.

A Log Kow of 2.17 was estimated via the QSAR model KOWWIN v1.67 (US EPA, 2009).

Solubility in water was estimated to be >2100 mg/l by Horvat et al., (1999) by analysing two independent experimental sets.

Based on its structure, HCFC 123 is s not expected to be surface active.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex X and/or with column 1 of REACH Annex IX and/or the REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment (chapter R7.A), data on the particle size distribution, explosiveness, oxidising properties, pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water are not needed.

HCFC 123 has no flammable range and does not have to be classified as flammable in accordance with EU Classification, Labeling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. As the substance is a liquid with a flash point >200°C, the data on auto flammability are not required in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII the study on explosive properties does not need to be conducted as there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in this substance. In addition according to REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, methods are only applicable for liquids and solids.

Regarding oxidizing properties, in accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted as the substance does not contain oxygen or halogen atoms chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen
