Description of key information

The 96 hour LC50 of methyl ethyl sulphide to Danio rerio is greater than 49.8 mg/L as there was no mortality or visible abnormalities at the highest concentration tested (100 mg/L nominal, equal to 49.8 mg/L average exposure after 96 hours).

Additional information

The toxicity of diethyl sulphide to fish has been read across from methyl ethyl sulphide. These substances are sulphides characterised by a sulphur atom in a carbon chain with the same structure over very similar carbon chain lengths (C4 for diethyl sulphide and C3 for methyl ethyl sulphide). Similarities between the available data for acute toxicity to Daphnia and algae show the similarity of the ecotoxicological properties of the two substances.

Gancet (2006) is a GLP-compliant, semi-static study which follows OECD guidelines 202. The study fulfils the validity criteria and is considered reliable and suitable for use for this endpoint. No mortality or visible abnormality was observed at the highest concentration tested and so the LC50 was determined to be above the highest concentration tested.
