Additional information

The test substance is readily biodegradable under aerobic conditions. The substance is used as positive control in biodegradation testing. Under anaerobic conditions the substance degrades rapidly to CO2 and methane (Birch, 1989).

As the substance is readily biodegradable, tests on degradation in water-sediment systems and in soil can be waived based on the criteria (rapid biodegradation) as indicated in column 2 (REACH Annex IX section 9.2.1.2 and 9.2.1.3).

Based on the LogKow (1.88, based on benzoic acid) a low potential for bioaccumulation of the test substance is expected.

In addition based on this low logKow the potential of the test substance to adsorp to sludge or soil is expected to be low. Therefore the studies for these endpoints are waived.
