First-aid measures

General: Move into fresh air and keep at rest. Get medical attention immediately

Inhalation: Move the exposed person to fresh air at once.

Skin contact: Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Wash area with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Eye contact: In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention.

Ingestion: If conscious, drink plenty of water. Get medical attention

Notes to physician

Symptoms: Product may hydrolyse upon contact with body fluids in the gastrointestinal tract to produce additional methanol; therefore, consider the signs/symptoms of methanol poisoning and also observe the known latency period of several days

Get medical attention immediately. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water.

Fire-fighting measures

General precautions: Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire. Use standard firefighting procedures and consider the hazards of other involved materials. Prevent runoff from fire control or dilution from entering streams, sewers, or drinking water supply.

Suitable extinguishing media: Alcohol resistant foam. Carbon dioxide Dry chemical. Water Spray or Fog

Unsuitable extinguishing media: Do not use water jet as an extinguisher, as this will spread the fire.

Special hazards arising from the fire: In case of fire, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide may be formed.

Special fighting procedures: Take precautionary measures against static discharges. To prevent and minimize fire or explosion risk from static accumulation and discharge, effectively bond and/or ground product transfer system.

Special protective equipment for firefighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid contact with liquid and vapors. Use personal protective equipment.

Environmental precautions: Do not allow runoff to sewer, waterway or ground

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up: Absorb spillage with suitable absorbent material. Shovel up and place in a container for salvage or disposal.

Handling and storage

Advice on safe handling: Do not taste or swallow. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Wash hands after handling. Provide adequate ventilation. Avoid inhalation of dust and vapors.

Storage conditions: Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Components with workplace control parameters

Components              CAS-No.        Control parameters

2-Methoxyethanol    109-86-4     1 ppm; Ireland. OELVs, Schedule 1 (Code of Practice for Chemical Agents Regulations), as amended (2011); EU. Indicative Occupational Exposure Limit Values in Directives 91/322/EEC, 2000/39/EC, 2006/15/EC, 2009/161/EU, 2017/164/EU, as amended (02 2017); EU. Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limit Values (SCOELs), European Commission - SCOEL, as amended (2014)

Exposure controls

Appropriate engineering controls: Provide eyewash station and safety shower. General (mechanical) room ventilation is expected to be satisfactory if handled at low temperatures or in covered equipment. Provide adequate ventilation if fumes or vapors are generated.

Individual protection methods

General information: Use only in well-ventilated areas. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using the product. Wash hands after handling. Practice good housekeeping.

Eye/face protection: Safety glasses with side-shields conforming to EN166

Hand protection: Advice: Chemical resistant gloves

Other skin protection: Safety shoes. Wear suitable protective clothing

Respiratory protection: Respirator with a vapour filter (EN 141) Avoid inhalation of vapors. In case of inadequate ventilation, use air-supplied full-mask.

Hygiene measures: Avoid contact with eyes. When using do not smoke. Wash thoroughly after handling.

Environmental exposure controls: No release to wastewater from process as such, wastewater emissions limited to release generated from final equipment cleaning step using water

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity: no data available

Chemical stability: material is stable under normal conditions

Possibility of hazardous reactions: Hazardous polymerisation does not occur

Conditions to avoid: Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking. Keep away from moisture.

Incompatible materials: Moisture

Hazardous decomposition materials: In case of fire, gives off (emits): Carbon oxides Oxides of silicon. Carbon monoxide is highly toxic if inhaled; carbon dioxide in sufficient concentrations can act as an asphyxiant. Acute overexposure to the products of combustion may result in irritation of the respiratory tract.

Disposal considerations

General information: The generation of waste should be avoided or minimized wherever possible. Do not discharge into drains, water courses or onto the ground. Use appropriate personal protective equipment as advised in relevant section.

Disposal methods: Dilute waste in large quantities of water and flush into sewer connected to wastewater treatment system in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
