Thermal stability:

The DSC-measurement (prepared at 1003 hPa) in a closed glass crucible with the test item showed mutiple endothermic effects in the temperature range 180 °C to 250 °C. The crucible burst at approx. 415 °C.

Melting point (DSC):

Due to the optical inspection and the results from the DSC-measurements under nitrogen it can be concluded that the test item has a melting range under protective gas of 211 °C to 214 °C.

Due to the optical inspection, the result of the capillary measurement and the results from the DSC-measurements under air it can be concluded that the test item starts to melt under decomposition under air at 201 °C.

Conclusions:
The test item starts melting under protective gas at approx. 212°C.
The test item starts melting under decomposition under air at 201 °C.

Description of key information

Cobalt(2+) propionate starts melting under protective gas at approx. 212 °C and start melting under decomposition under air at 201 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The melting point of the test substance was determined according to OECD guideline 102 with the differential scanning calorimetry method (DSC).The test item was heated up from ambient to the final temperature (500 °C, 450 °C and 250°C respectively) at a constant heating rate (10 K/min) in a defined atmosphere (nitrogen). The quantity of heat absorbed or released was measured and recorded. Aluminium crucibles with a small hole were used as containers for the test item and as empty reference crucible.

Two additional measurements have been performed under air. The test item was heated up from ambient to the final temperature (500 °C and 250 °C respectively) at a constant heating rate (10 K/min) under air. The quantity of heat absorbed or released was measured and recorded. Aluminium crucibles with a small hole were used as containers for the test item and as empty reference crucible.

A measurement in a capillary tube in a metal block was used to clarify the results from the DSC-measurement. The maximum temperature of this equipment is limited to 400 °C. Set point and maximum temperature were chosen according to the results of the DSC measurements.

The results of the optical inspection and the DSC-measurements under nitrogen showed that cobalt(2 +) propionate has a melting range under protective gas of 211 °C to 214 °C. The results of the optical inspection, the capillary measurement and the DSC-measurements under air showed that cobalt(2 +) propionate starts to melt under decomposition under air at 201 °C.
