Executive summary:

The chemical oxygen demand (COD) of FAT 36038/F was determined according to DEV DIN 38'409 - H 41 -1 (1980) corresponding to 92/96/EEC C.6.

A predetermined amount of the test substance FAT 36038/F in water is oxidized by potassium dichromate in a strong sulphuric acid medium with silver sulphate as a catalyst under reflux for 2 hours. The residual dichromate is determined by titration with standardized ferrous ammonium sulphate.

The test substance was tested with a sample weight of 5.47 + 5.70 mg. The reference substance Potassium hydrogen phthalate solution was tested in a concentration of 20 ml/l.

Result:

The COD of FAT 36038/F is 1120 mg O2/g.

The COD of the reference substance is 196 mg O2/I.

Description of key information

FAT 36038 is not readily biodegradable.

Additional information

The biodegradability of Disperse Violet 057 has been studied in several studies over the years. In the most recent study (1993), the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of FAT 36038/F was determined to be 1120 mg COD/g. In a study performed to determine the biological elimination of FAT 36038/C according to a guideline which is equivalent or similar to OECD test guideline 303 A (confirmatory test), at the end of 28 days, the biological elimination of FAT 36038/C was found to be 98 % (TOC removal). In several supporting studies, following BOD5 and COD values were determined:


FAT 36038/A: BOD5 = 42 mg/g O2, COD = 1293 mg COD/g


FAT 36038/C: BOD5 = 40 mg/g O2, COD = 775 mg COD/g


FAT 36038/D: BOD5 = 190 mg/g O2, COD = 854 mg COD/g


The BOD5/COD quotient was found to be less than 0.5 in each case, therefore, the substance is considered to be not indicative of rapid degradation. Taking all data into consideration, FAT 36038 is not readily biodegradable.
