Executive summary:

Flammability was determined in accordance with UN method N.1. In the preliminary test the test item could not be ignited. Based on the results of the preliminary test, no main test was performed. The test item is considered as a not readily combustible solid of Division 4.1.

Description of key information

The test substance is not flammable upon ignition.

The substance has no pyrophoric properties and does not liberate flammable gases in contact with water.

The substance is not a self-heating substance or mixture.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The flammability properties of test substance were assessed in a test according to Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria sixth revised edition; Test N.1: Test method for readily combustible solids (TOXI-COOP, 2017). In the preliminary test the test item could not be ignited. Based on the results of the preliminary test, no main test was performed. The test item is regarded as not readily combustible solid.

A test according to UN method N.4 was performed to determine the self heating properties (LAUS, 2018). The test item was placed into a stainless steel cube and the environment (oven) was heated from room temperature to the temperature which is specified in the respective experimental conditions (140 °C). Only experiment 1 was performed. No increase in the temperature of the sample in comparison to that of the oven was detected; also, no signs of ignition could be observed. Therefore, the test item Zinc di(benzimidazol-2-yl) disulphide should not be classified as self-heating substance in accordance with Division 4.2 UN Manual of Tests and Criteria.

Based on chemical structure pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water are not to be expected.

Based on the preliminary results of the EU method A.16, self-heating of the test substance can be excluded up to 400 °C.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with Annex I, Section 2.1, Section 2.2, Section 2.3, Section 2.7, Section 2.9, Section 2.10 Section 2.11, Section 2.12 of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and UN GHS Rev 7 (2017) the substance has not to be classified as readily combustible solid in class 4 Division 4.1, self-heating substance in Class 4 Division 4.2, substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases in Class 4 Division 4.3, pyrophoric solid in class 4 Division 4.2, flammable gases in class 2 or as aerosol in class 2.
