Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Water solubility testing on the substance itself is not possible since the substance is hydrolytically unstable. On contact with water the substance hydrolyses to dioctyltin oxide and lauric acid. Water solubility information on dioctyltin oxide is included to address this endpoint together with information on read-across substances to the other hydrolysis product, lauric acid.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
0 g/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

In accordance with point 7.7 of Column 2 (Specific rules for adaptation from Column 1), Annex VII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH), it is considered justified to omit water solubility testing on the substance itself as testing is not technically possible, since the substance is hydrolytically unstable. Instead, information on the hydrolysis product, dioctyltin oxide is included to address this endpoint together with information on read-across substances to the other hydrolysis product, lauric acid.

The supporting study (Tarran, 2012) determination of the water solubility of dioctyltin oxide was carried out using the flask method, designed to be compatible with Method A.6 Water Solubility of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 105 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995. The water solubility of dioctyltin oxide was determined to be less than 1.52 x 10⁻⁵g/L of solution at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C.

The Environmental Risk Assessment report included water solubility values for the sodium salt of C12 fatty acid and the calcium salt of C12 fatty acid, from secondary sources. The water solubility of the sodium salt was reported to be 22000 mg/L at 24 °C. The water solubility of the calcium salt was reported to be 8.7 mg/L in soft water (0.3 mmol [Ca]) and 2.7 mg/L in hard water (3 mmol [Ca]). Information regarding the materials and methods used to generate these values were not reported.
