Preliminary Study (Screening Test)

The flammability of dehydroacetic acid sodium salt was determined by ignition of a cluster with a length of 250 mm, a width of 20 mm and a height of 10 mm with the hot flame of a gas burner.

The test item was not flammable within 2 minutes by the flame of the gas burner within the ignition zone (the first 50 mm of the formed test item).

During the treatment with the flame of the gas burner and within the flame zone, the test item glowed yellow-orange and changed its powdery appearance by forming a voluminous, porous, black-greyish residuum. After removing the gas burner flame, the test item did not burn self-actingly. By contact the black-greyish residuum disintegrated into a kind of powder and revealed the subjacent test item in its apparently original appearance.

The test item has to be classified and “Not readily combustible solid”.

Description of key information

non flammable

no pyrophoricity

no flammability in contact with water

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The substance dehydroacetic acid sodium salt is a not readily combustible solid (UN N.1, screening test).

Based on experience in handling and use and the chemical structure pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water are not to be expected.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification:

Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.
