Iodine pentafluoride is a yellow liquid with a melting point of 9.4 ºC and a boiling point of 101.5 ºC (CRC Handbook of chemistry and physics, 88th ed., 2007 -2008). Its relative density is 3.19 at 20 ºC (CRC Handbook of chemistry and physics, 88th ed., 2007 -2008). The vapour pressure at 20°C is 2666.45 Pa (20 Torr) and the viscosity at 25°C is 2.191 mPa S. The substance reacts violently with water (Chapman&Hall database, 1997), therefore the determinations of water solubility, octanol-water partition coefficient, surface tension and dissociation constant are technically not feasible in accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI. In accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI the performance of the studies on flash point and auto-flammability is scientifically unjustified, as flammability is determined by the ability of the substance to react with oxygen. As iodine is already present in an unstable oxidized state (+5) and fluoride is a more electronegative element than oxygen, and cannot be oxidized, the substance is essentially non-flammable. Based on the lack of chemical groups associated with explosive properties in the structure of the molecule, the substance is considered to be non-explosive. As IF5 is rapidly hydrolised to HF and IO3 -, and iodates as a chemical group are associated with oxidising properties (REACH guidance R.7a), IF5 is classified as oxidising. As the substance is inorganic, in accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the stability in organic solvents did not need to be conducted.
