Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No studies about Samarium chloride were available, but studies about analogue compounds:
Growth rate: EC50 (72h) = 28.2 mg/L and EC10(72h) = 2.3 mg/L for Desmodesmus subspicatus (OECD 201).
Cell number: EC50 (72h) = 22.9 mg/L and EC10(72h) = 2.5 mg/L for Desmodesmus subspicatus (OECD 201).
Growth rate: EC50 (72 h) = 7.16 mg/L for Skeletonema costatum (ISO 8692).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
28.2 mg/L
EC50 for marine water algae:
7.16 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
2.3 mg/L

Additional information

A GLP-study according to OECD 201 on the toxicity to Desmodesmus subspicatus was performed with analogue Lanthanum trichloride hydrate (Bogers 1995). Based on Lanthanum trichloride, anhydrous, the EC50 (72 h, growth rate) was determined as 28.2 mg/L and the EC50 (72 h, cell number) as 22.9 mg/L, the EC10 (72 h) values for growth rate and cell number were 2.3 mg/L and 2.5 mg/L, respectively. Tai et al. (2010) investigated the acute toxicity to the marine algae Skeletonema costatum with Lanthanum trichloride according to ISO 8692. The EC50 (72 h, growth rate) was 7.16 mg/L, an EC10/NOEC value or effect values, which were based on biomass, were not stated.
