Description of key information
Hafnium tetrachloride is non flammable and reacts violently with water (EUH014) according to the 1272/2008/CEE regulation (CLP)

Additional information
Flammability is usually seen as the ease with which the substance can burn or be ignited. However it also includes spontaneously flammability (pyrophoricity) and ignition on contact with water.
Pyrophoricity:
In the daily use and handling of Hafnium tetrachloride during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that Hafnium tetrachloride has pyrophoric properties.
Flammability in contact with water:
Under conditions where Hafnium tetrachloride is in contact with water no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed. HfCl4 is instantly hydrolized in water to hafnium oxide dichloride octahydrate and hydrogene chloride :
HfCl4 + H20 -->HfOCl2 + 2 HCl.

This degree includes materials that can undergo chemical change with rapid release of energy at normal temperatures and pressures This also includes materials that may react violently with water or that may form potentially explosive mixtures with water.
The substance will react with water (some violently), releasing corrosive and/or toxic gases, which leads to assign:

-according to the 1272/2008/CEE regulation: EUH014 - "Reacts violently with water"
Flammability:
HfCl4 is known to have similar properties than ZrCl4. A flammability test of Zirconium Tetrachloride has been performed by EUROFINS following EC method A.10.This test shows that the substance is not flammable, Thus, HfCl4 neither.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Hafnium tetrachloride is not classified as flammable.
