Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

According to column 2 (section 7.7 Annex VII) of the REACH regulation on standard information requirements, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is hydrolytically unstable. Reactivity with water has been investigated by CITOX (see section 5.1.2), the conclusion is that the test item was found to be hydrolyzed within less than 5 seconds when introduced in an aqueous medium at room temperature, according to the reaction: HfCl4 + H20 -->HfOCl2 + 2 HCl. This reaction is rapid and the decomposition occurred together with evolution of hydrogen chloride. Therefore, water solubility testing does not need to be conducted.
For assessment purpose, the solubility value has been set to the HfO2 water solubility : below 5 µg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment
