Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusion on classification

Parent substance:

Short-term aquatic toxicity data are available for three trophic levels. The lowest observed acute effect concentration is a 96-h LC50 value of 32.8 mg/L as derived from a study with fish (D. rerio). Long-term aquatic toxicity data are available from a study with aquatic algae in which a 72 -h EC10 value of 29.3 mg/L was derived. The substance is qualified as readily biodegradable but failing the 10 -day window and therefore considered to be not rapidly degradable for the prupose of classification. The log Kow value is determined at <4 (no experimentally determined BCF value is available). Based on all this information, the substance needs to be classified as Aquatic Chronic Category 3, H412 (Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects).

Hydrolysis products:

Butane-1,4-diol (CAS 110-63-4) is readily biodegradable. The log Kow is <4. The lowest acute effect concentration is >>100 mg/L, the lowest chronic value is >> 1 mg/L. Based on this information, the substance needs not be classified for the environment.

Acetaldehyde (CAS 75-07-0) is readily biodegradable. The log Kow is <4. The lowest acute effect concentration is 30.8 mg/L, the lowest chronic value is >> 1mg/L. Based on this information, the substance needs not be classified for the environment.
