TEST CONDITIONS
- Volume of test solution/treatment: Not reported
- Composition of medium: Wastewater (details in “Test System”)
- Additional substrate: No
- Test temperature: Not specified in the study report. The porous pots were conducted under ambient laboratory conditions, approx. 20 C (source: author of study report).

TEST SYSTEM

- Number of culture flasks/concentration: 1
- Hydraulic retention time (HRT): Approx. 6 h (controlled by the influent rate using low-volume pumps)
- Sludge retention time: Approx. 10 d (controlled by removing sludge solids from the bioreactor)
- Operation of porous pot: The pots were amended with 10% freshly collected activated sludge weekly. The sludge was stirred continuously at medium speed to thoroughly mix and maintain the solids in suspension. Wastewater (influent) and test material solution were dosed directly to the activated sludge. Effluent passed through the porous pot and discharged through a side port of the outer jacket positioned approx. one inch from the top of the porous pot. The porous pots were allowed to operate for 2 SRTs to attain steady state. Sampling of effluent samples was performed following this acclimation period

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not applicable
Conclusions:
No removal of N,N(bis)-2-hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulphate (A050) was observed over a six week testing period in a porous pot removal test.
Executive summary:

A porous pot removal test was conducted on N,N(bis)-2-hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulphate (A050), following the EPA OPPTS 835.3220 (Porous Pot Test) guideline. The test material was tested at approx. 20 mg TOC/L. The inoculum was activated sludge collected from aeration basin of Fairfield Wastewater Treatment Plant which receives predominantly domestic sewage. The test treatment and inoculum blank were measured singly.

Stainless steel porous pots containing activated sludge were continuously fed with domestic sewage and the test material. The pots were operated with an SRT (solids retention time) of 10 d and an HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 6 h.

The porous pots were allowed to operate for 2 SRTs to attain steady state. Following this acclimation period, effluent samples were collected periodically, analyzed for soluble organic carbon (SOC) and compared to that of a control porous pot receiving no test substance.

No removal of N,N(bis)-2 -hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulphate was observed over a six week testing period in the porous pot removal test.
