Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No effects up to the limit of water solubility (1.5-4.4 µg/L at 20 °C, OECD 211), read across.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Since no studies investigating the chronic toxicity of 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate (CAS 59219-71-5) towards aquatic invertebrates are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related analogue substance of branched-nonyl 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoate (EC 701-133-3) was conducted. This read across is justified, as both source and target substances are characterized by equal fatty acid moieties ( 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoic acid) and/or similar alcohol moieties (C9 iso alcohol with varying branching options). The read-across is justified in more detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment.

One GLP study according to OECD 211 is available investigating the long-term effects of branched-nonyl 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoate (EC 701-133-3) on reproduction, mobility and growth of Daphnia magna (IME, 2013). A water accommodated fraction of the test item at the nominal loading of 100 mg/L was tested under semi-static conditions for 21 d. No effects on the reproduction , mobility and growth of D. magna was observed after the exposure resulting in a NOELR (21 d) ≥ 100 mg/L. Based on this result it can be concluded that no toxicological long-term effects on aquatic invertebrates are expected up to the limit of water solubility for branched-nonyl 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoate.

Based on the results from the structurally related source substance ( branched-nonyl 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoate (EC 701-133-3)) it can be concluded that 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate (CAS 59219-71-5) does not pose a hazard to aquatic invertebrates under chronic exposure conditions.
