The evaluation of toxic potential of the substance to aquatic invertebrates was evaluated by considering data on the similar substances OB 1 -DSA, OB 2 -DSA and OB 3a-MSA.

Justification for Read Across is given in Section 13 of IUCLID.

In two GLP studies the substance OB 1 -DSA was tested at 24 and 48 h on Daphnia magna with EC50 > 100 mg/l (Ciba-Geigy Ltd., 1996 and Springborn Smithers Laboratories, 2008, respectively).

The studies were conducted according to the OECD Guideline 202. As a consequence it can be concluded that no short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrate is expected for the substance.

The acute toxicity of OB 2 -DSA to Daphnia magna was determined in a 48-hour static test according to the OECD Guideline 202 (Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test).

Daphnids were exposed to the substance at 1000 mg/l.

In the control and in all test concentrations no immobilization of the daphnids has been observed after 48 hours of substance exposure. The EC50 value therefore is set to be greater than 1000 mg/L.

Acute toxicity of OB 3a-MSA to Daphnia magna was evaluated in the 48 hours test, according to the EU method C2. A single dose was administrated at 100 mg/l (limit test). No dead occurred

At 48 hours the EC0 was equal/higher than 113 mg/l (meas. - arithm mean), thus the EC50 was estimated to be higher than 113 mg/l (Bayer AG., 2000). The result was confirmed by two supporting studies, one performed at just 24h (RCC Umweltchemie AG, 1988) and the other one at 48h, but just the summary is available (Solvias AG, 1999), with no effect up to 1000 mg/l.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates is not expected also for OB 3a-DSA.
