Description of key information

Due to the in-solubility of slags in octanol and water, determination of log Kow can be considered as technically not feasible and a theoretical log Kow of slags would be very low. The highly insolubility of slags, tin-smelting in water leads to the behaviour of this substance similar to that of sand or gravel. Even in case of uptake of all detected metals by organisms (as a worst case), an accumulation can be excluded. 
A cross-check with the bioaccumulative behaviour of the corresponding metals and metal oxides via ECHA´s website for registered substances revealed that none of the metals/metal oxides has been identified to show potential for bioaccumulation. Relevant exposure of aquatic compartment is unlikely regarding the use of slags, tin-smelting – therefore releases of slags, tin-smelting to the environment in general, and to the aquatic compartment can be excluded.
Against this background determination of bioaccumulation in aquatic species does not need to be conducted under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).
