Description of key information
biodegradation
Ready biodegradability was assessed for the test item in the Manometric Respirometry Test according to OECD guideline 301F. The test item was exposed to aerobic activated sludge from the aeration tank of a domestic waste water treatment plant for 28 days. Biodegradation was evaluated based on ThODNH4 and ThODNO3. No biodegradation was observed after 28 days (0 %).
As a reference item sodium benzoate was tested simultaneously under the same conditions as the test item, and functioned as a procedure control. Sodium benzoate was sufficiently degraded after 14 days (83 %) and 28 days (89 %).
stability
Aqueous solutions of the test item were prepared in different buffer solutions pH 4, 7 and 9 to investigate its stability according to OECD guideline 111. The analytical behavior of the test item was investigated first in order to obtain an analytical method for the analysis of the sample solutions by HPLC/UV-detection. For the freshly prepared solutions the validity criteria for the used concentration range have been met using calibration curves/linear regression.However, in course of these measurements alterations of the HPLC signal shapes were observed after 1 day respectively.
This effect was attributed to chemical interaction of the test item with the different buffer solution salts. Therefore, the study is regarded as technically not feasible.
adsorption/desorption
The substance is highly soluble in water and pratically insoluble in n-octanol resulting in an log pow below - 2.5. According to column 2 / Annex VIII of regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 no testing of absorption-desorption behaviour of the substance is required. An absorption/desorption screening test according to OECD guideline 121 is scientifically not necessary.
