Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Data available on one of the C5 non-cyclic category streams indicate that this stream was not irritating to the skin or eye. However as C5 non-cyclics streams are of unknown and variable composition and as a number of the component substances are considered to be or are classified as irritating to the skin, eye and/or respiratory system, classification is warranted for all streams.

Additional information

Non human data

In skin and eye irritation studies, the non-cyclic C5 stream (CAS No 92128 -68 -2) was found to be non-irritating to both skin and eyes (BASF 1990 c & d). However, several components in the C5 non-cyclic category streams are classified (or warrant classification) as irritants. For this reason classification is proposed for all of the streams in this category.

Component classification

Irritating to skin (DSD – Xi, R38; CLP- Cat 2 H315); Marker substances: benzene; toluene; Potential components:1,3-pentadiene; 2-methyl-butene; cyclopentene; cyclopentadiene; pentenes.

Irritating to eyes (DSD – Xi, R36; CLP- Cat 2 H319): Marker substance: benzene; Potential components:1,3-pentadiene; cyclopentene; cyclopentadiene; pentenes.

Irritating to respiratory tract (DSD – Xi, R37; CLP- STOT-SE Cat 3 H335); Potential components:1,3-pentadiene; cyclopentadiene; pentenes.

Human data

No reports of skin, eye or respiratory irritation due to human exposure to C5 non-cyclics streams have been found and there is no indication of irritant potential of C5 non-cyclic streams. There are no reports of skin corrosivity due to human exposure to C5 non-cyclic streams.

Justification for classification or non-classification

There is data on only one C5 non-cyclics stream which is not irritating to the skin or eyes. However streams in this category contain variable amounts of several component and marker substances which are classified as irritating to the skin, eyes and/or respiratory tract. As C5 non-cyclics streams are inherently of unknown and variable composition and as a significant number of the component substances are irritating, it is proposed that all C5 non-cyclic category streams should be classified as Xi, R38, R36 and R37 according to DPD and Category 2, H315 and H319 and STOT-SE Category 3 H335 according to CLP.
