Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: The substance will degrade in the atmosphere to form

diethylamine and t-butylamine, which are considered to be

dangerous by inhalation.  If vapours are inhaled, move to

area of fresh air.  Seek medical advice if difficulty

breathing or if signs of discomfort.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15

minutes.  Seek medical advice.  Show copy of safety sheet to

medical staff.

Treat as for amines

Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with soap and water.  Remove contaminated clothing and

wash before re-use.  Seek medical advice.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek medical advice.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Carbon dioxide and chemical foam.  The substance is reactive

in water and will react violently forming flammable gas.

Product arising from burning: Complete combustion will lead to carbon dioxide, nitrogen

oxides, water and tantalum oxide. Under confined conditions,

incomplete combustion may lead to the formation of carbon

monoxide and amines.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Face protection with breathing apparatus, coveralls and

chemical resistant rubber gloves.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Absorb onto sand, paper or other suitable absorbant material

and dispose of as hazardous waste.  The area of spill may be

washed with with large quantities of detergent and water if

there is good ventilation and no source of ignition.

Contain area of spill with sandbags or other suitable

material.

Handling and storage

Handling: Protective equipment when handling the substance in bulk or

during transfer prior to use should include suitable

butyl gloves, goggles and protective outer clothing.  The

area should have good ventilation or breathing apparatus

should be used.

Precautions should be followed as considered appropriate for

corrosive amines.

Storage: Store cool (< 4°C) in the dark.  Avoid exposure to water or

air.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Expected to be imported in stainless steel containers with a

volume of approximately 1.2 litres

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: None reported

Chemical reaction with water: Reacts violently with water forming release of diethylamine

and t-butylamine.  These alkylamines, which are highly

flammable and corrosive, may be evolved in dangerous

quantities.

Dust explosion: Not applicable

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not possible to recover after use or if spilled.  The

substance reacts rapidly in the presence of moist air.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Small amounts can be mixed in a large excess of water

(heeding warnings of exothermic reaction).  The degradation

product diethylamine will dissolve in an excess of water and

can be neutralised with weak acid.

The diluted solution is not considered to be dangerous.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: This is recommended for disposal. Waste gas scrubbing to

remove noxious fumes should be used.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not recommended.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not applicable for the public
