Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

key study
Study period:
21 August 2003 to 26 August 2003
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.16 (Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Key result
Remarks on result:
no self-ignition observed up to the melting point

No ignition was detected at temperatures below 400 °C, the upper temperature limit of the test.

An endothermic peak was observed at approximately 161 °C which is attributed to the melting of the substance.

At the end of the test, the sample basket was observed to be empty, which is consistent with the test material melting during the test.

Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the test, the test material did not ignite below the melting point. The study is considered to be reliable, relevant and adequate for risk assessment and classification and labelling purposes.
Executive summary:

The relative self ignition of the test material was determined in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.16. No ignition was detected at temperatures below 400 °C, the upper temperature limit of the test. An endothermic peak was observed at approximately 161 °C which is attributed to the melting of the substance. At the end of the test, the sample basket was observed to be empty, which is consistent with the test material melting during the test.

Description of key information

No ignition was observed below the melting point of the test substance, EU Method A.16, Jackson 2003

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The relative self ignition of the test material was determined in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.16. No ignition was detected at temperatures below 400 °C, the upper temperature limit of the test. An endothermic peak was observed at approximately 161 °C which is attributed to the melting of the substance. This value is below the onset of melting as reported in the melting point study, however these tests were performed on different samples, the purity of which differed by as much as 3% which may exert some effect on the onset of melting point of the substance. Furthermore, the substances were heated using different apparatus and using different temperature programmes, this can also be observed from the approximate melting point reported in the boiling point study. At the end of the test, the sample basket was observed to be empty, which is consistent with the test material melting during the test. The study was performed in line with GLP and an accepted standardised guideline with a high standard of reporting. The study was assigned a reliability score of Klimisch 1 and considered suitable for assessment as an accurate reflection of the test substance.

The available data are considered to be complete and the conclusion of the study, no ignition observed below the melting point of the test substance, was carried forward for risk assessment.
