Results

The initial sample appearance was a white powder. As the boiling tube was heated at 10°C/minute, the sample was observed to boil and darken to a light brown colour at a temperature of approximately 364°C, indicating decomposition at this temperature. When heating was continued beyond this temperature to 400°C, the sample continued to darken in colour. At the end of the visual assessment, the material was a dark brown liquid.

The resulting profile by DSC shows the melting endotherm at approximately 250°C and the onset of decomposition at approximately 350°C. During the DSC assessment, the test item was initially described as a white powder and following the measurement the material had turned into a black residue.

There is an additional smaller endotherm at approximately 190°C, the cause of which is not known, but which maybe a loss of a volatile component.

Conclusion

The boiling temperature of the test item, Potassium 12-hydroxystearate, was not determinable as the test item decomposed on boiling at temperatures above approximately 364°C.

Conclusions:
The boiling point of potassium 12-hydroxystearate could not be determined as the substance decomposed upon boiling at temperatures above approximately 364°C.
Executive summary:

The boiling point of potassium 12-hydroxystearate was investigated in a GLP-compliant study following OECD guideline 103. The boiling point of potassium 12-hydroxystearate could not be determined as the substance decomposed on boiling at temperatures above approximately 364°C.
