First-aid measures

General: Get medical attention if any discomfort develops. Seek medical attention for all burns, regardless how minor they may seem. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Inhalation: Black copper may cause respiratory sensitization. Can induce hypersensitivity (asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis or alveolitis) of the airways following inhalation of the substance.

In case of exposure to fumes, fine particulates, powders, flakes, move to fresh air, lay patient down, get medical attention if discomfort persists.

Skin contact: Black copper may cause skin sensitization (dermatitis). Use general hygiene measure for contact with the material: wash with soap and warm water. Seek medical attention in case of rash or skin discomfort

In case of contact with molten product, cool rapidly with water and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to remove molten product from skin because skin will tear easily. Cuts or abrasions should be treated promptly with thorough cleansing of the affected area.

Eye contact: Black copper is not an eye irritant. Use general measures if eye irritations occur. Do not rub eyes. Remove any contact lenses. Flush eyes thoroughly with water, taking care to rinse under eyelids. If irritation persists, continue flushing for 15 minutes, rinsing from time to time under eyelids. If discomfort continues, consult a physician.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth thoroughly. Give 200-300 ml water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.

Notes to physician: Treat symptomatically. The effects might be delayed.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:       Material is non-flammable. Use fire fighting measures appropriate to surrounding materials.

Sand, graphite, dolomite, sodium chlorite

Extinguishers that must not be used for safety reasons:Do not use water or halogenated extinguishing media.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture: Black copper is non-flammable. Unusual fire and explosion hazards: solid metal is not flammable. However, finely divided metallic dust or powder may form an explosive mixture with air. Do not use water on molten metal: explosion hazard could result. Specific hazards fire or high temperatures create metal oxides.

Advice for fire fighters: Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:       Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid inhalation of dust and/or fumes. Wear suitable clothing, breathing protection (P3 filter) and face protection.

Restrict the area to those persons wearing respiratory protection. Do not allow unprotected people into the area until cleanup has been completed.

Environmental precautions:       Avoid release to the environment. DO NOT empty into drains or waterways .

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Material for containment:Standard

Methods for cleaning up:Ventilate the area thoroughly

Restrict the area to those persons wearing respiratory protection. Do not allow unprotected people into the area until cleanup has been completed.

Allow spilled material to solidify and scrape up with shovels into a suitable container for recycle or disposal as hazardous waste.

Liquids containing powder should be absorbed in vermiculite, dry sand, or earth before putting into a suitable container for recycle or disposal as hazardous waste.

Collect small particles or dusty material using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. Place in a suitable container for recycling or disposal as hazardous waste

DO NOT empty into drains or waterways .

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

Safe handling:       Provide adequate ventilation.

Avoid generation and spreading of dust (use of hoods above smelters and appropriate dust filters).

Avoid inhalation of dust and small particles and contact with skin and eyes. - Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves and/or RPE) in areas where dusts are present (smelting area and during critical maintenance operations).

Observe good industrial hygiene practices.

Perform appropriate monitoring campaigns to demonstrate absence of risks towards exposures of Cu, Ni, Pb, ...

Procedural and control technologies are to be used to minimise emission and any resulting exposure (when handling the substance, during cleaning and maintenance works and in case of accident). All procedures are to be well documented and supervised by the site operator.

Only properly trained and authorised personnel may handle the substance.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Requirements to be met by storerooms and containers:

In most cases the material will be manufactured, transported and used in molten form. However, if necessary the material is cooled down, stored and transported in massive form, thereby reducing the risks of exposure.

Store away from incompatible materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, avoiding contact with heat and acids.

Further information about storage conditions:Keep away from ignition sources (e.g. heat and open flames). Avoid contact with sharp edges and hot surfaces.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure controls

Technical protection measures:

Local exhaust ventilation with enclosure and general ventilation are required in case of emission of dust/aerosol in air. Suction nozzles of local ventilation should be located at or below work level. Air outtakes of general ventilation should be located at the top of the room and air intakes should be located at the bottom of the room. In normal situations, the material is stored and transported in massive form.

Personal Protection:Avoid direct contact with the material. If the concentration level is determined and known, select appropriate personal protection measures taking into account the concentration at the given workplace, exposure length and works performed by the given employee as well as the instructions provided by the producer of the personal protection equipment.

Eye/face protection:If exposure is possible, use goggles or protective eyewear (EN 166).

Skin protection:Wear protective clothing.

Body / hand protection:When material is in molten state, wear gloves to protect against thermal burns. Suitable gloves can be recommended by the glove supplier.

Respiratory protection:In case of inadequate ventilation or risk of inhalation of dust.  Use a (half) mask with filter of a class appropriate for the material concentration level in air. In case of lack of oxygen, use self-contained or stationary respiratory equipment (EN 149).

Personal hygiene:Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practices. Wash hands after handling. Routinely wash work clothing and protective equipment to remove contaminants.

Environmental exposure controls:

Prevent the material from entering sewers, surface or soil waters.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity:No information available

Chemical stability:The substance is stable in normal conditions.

Possibility of hazardous reactions:No information available

Conditions to avoid:Keep away from ignition sources (e.g. heat and open flames). Avoid contact with sharp edges and hot surfaces. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, avoiding contact with heat and strong acids.

Incompatible materials:Strong acids

Hazardous decomposition products:No information available

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Product recommendation:Waste must be disposed of in accordance with the national and regional waste legislation.

Prevent the material from entering sewers, surface or soil waters.

Waste from surplus, unused product: recycling into the smelter is to be preferred rather than depositing the waste.
