Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Inhalation.  Remove to fresh air. Keep warm and at rest. Get medical attention if patient feels unwell.

Skin: Immediately wash skin with large quantities of water. Remove contaminated clothing during washing. Get medical attention.  Wash clothing before reuse.  Dispose of contaminated leather wear.

Eyes: Immediately flush eye with large quantities of water for at least 20 minutes holding the eye open. Avoid contaminating unaffected eye.  Get medical attention urgently.

Ingestion: Get medical attention urgently. Do not induce vomiting. Keep patient warm and at rest. Give 240-300 ml water to drink ( only if patient is conscious). Repeat if patient vomits.  Give activated charcoal.  Get urgent medical attention and show the label of the product.

Advice to physicians: Contains ethylene glycol.  Monitor serum electrolytes and renal function.  A serum concentration of <20mg/dL is considered non-toxic.  Consider administration of an alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor (ethanol, fomepizole).  Consider gastric lavage.  Treat symptomatically for corosive effects.

Fire-fighting measures

Special hazards: Hazardous combustion products may include carbon monoxide.

Fire/explosion hazards: Combustible material.  Burns but does not ignite readily. Containers may explode when heated.

Extinguishing media: Suitable: Polyvalent foam, dry chemical powder, carbon dioxide, water mist.  Unsuitable: Water in a jet.  Cool tanks/drums with water spray or remove to safe area.

Protective equipment: Full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Exposure controls and personal protection: Consider need to evacuate non-essential personnel.  Wear appropriate protective clothing.

Environmental precautions: Keep away from drains, water and soil. Advise authorities if spilled material has entered water courses or sewer or has contaminated soil or vegetation.

Clean up methods: Absorb or contain liquid with sand, earth or other non-combustible spill control material. Collect and place in a labelled sealable container for subsequent safe disposal. Flush contaminated area with plenty of water. Put leaking containers in a labelled drum or overdrum.

Handling and storage

Handling:  Observe normal hygiene standards. Clean contaminated clothing before re-use.  Provide emergency eye washing and shower facilities.

Storage:  Storage area should be cool and dry.  Keep container tightly closed.  Keep in a well-ventilated place.  Store in a bunded area.  For containers use mild steel or stainless steel, glass, high density polypropylene.  Compatible with baked phenolic or epoxy-phenolic coatings.  Not recommended: aluminium, tinned steel, zinc or galvanised steel, copper and copper based alloys.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Occupational exposure standards

- Ethylene glycol: EC IOEL: 8hr TWA: 20ppm/60mg/m3 (vapour).  10mg/m3 (particulate).  STEL: 40ppm/125mg/m3 (vapour).

- Diethylene glycol.  MAK 10ppm/44mg/m3 (vapour).

Technical control measures: Use containment and engineering control measures to minimise exposure during handling and use

Eye protection:  Protective goggles with side-shields

Hand protection:  Gloves made from natural rubber (~1mm), Neoprene™ rubber or nitrile rubber (0.5-0.6mm).  Breakthrough times >480mins for thicknesses shown.

Body protection: Neoprene™ apron. Rubber boots.

Stability and reactivity

Stability: Stable under normal conditions.  Hygroscopic.

Conditions to avoid: High temperatures.  Wet storage conditions.

Materials to avoid: Oxidising agents, strong acids.

Hazardous decomposition products: Oxides of carbon on combustion.

Disposal considerations

Waste disposal: Dispose of as for hazardous waste.  Recover or recycle if possible.  Otherwise incineration.  Dispose of in accordance with all local regulations.

Container disposal: Drain container thoroughly before disposal.  Send to drum recover or metal reclaimer.
