- Justification for type of information:
- The surface tension of the target substance, reaction mass of sodium methyl 2-sulphooctadecanoate and sodium 1-methoxy-1-oxohexadecane-2-sulphonate, was read-across from the two main components, C16MES and C18MES, as source substances. Based on the results of 3 studies for C16MES and 2 studies for C18MES, the target substance is considered to be surface active. It is concluded that the endpoint for the target substance is sufficiently covered by the available data of the source substances.

Description of key information
3 publications for C16MES, with 2 different methods: results: 36 mN/m in 0.1%, 39 mN/m in 0.2% and 40.4 mN/m in 0.1 %
2 publications for C18MES, same method: results: 39.7 mN/m in 0.1 % and 39 mN/m in 0.2%
The weight of evidence shows that C16MES and C18MES are surface active. The reaction mass is therefore also considered surface active.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
The results stated in each publication for both C16MES and C18MES are very similar. They were all determined at concentrations equal to or above the upper limit of 1 g/L stated in OECD 115. All results, as expected, are below 60 mN/m which is the OECD cut-off value for surface-active materials. The test results were all based on determinations at 25 ºC. It is anticipated that at 20 ºC, the results will be in the same range and the resulting label as surface active material will not be altered.
Theoretically, there shouldn't be a big difference in results between C16MES and C18MES. This is also found in the test results.
It is therefore judged that the results of the published articles are reliable and can be used to cover the surface tension of the reaction mass.
