Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is found to be readily biodegradable and the applied test concentrations are in the range of concentrations that can be expected in the influent of a sewage treatment plant

Description of key information

The substance is readily biodegradable.

The supporting study shows that high concentrations of sulfonatofatty acid methyl esters did not inhibit the oxidative performance of activated sludge.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The tested concentration in the ready biodegradability test at which toxicity can be ruled out can be considered as a NOEC for the toxicity to STP microorganisms.

The key study on C16MES for ready biodegradation reveals a NOEC of 100 mg/L.

This value is also considered valid to be used for C18MES based on the ready biodegradability and the similar structure of both components.
