The influence of the test item on the growth of the freshwater green algal species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly Selenastrum capricornutum) was investigated in a 72-hour static test according to the EU Commission Directive 92/69/EEC, C3 (1992) and the OECD Guideline 201 (2006).
Due to the low water solubility of the test item. a dispersion of the test item with the loading rate of 100 mg/L was continuously stirred at room temperature in the dark over 3 hours. Then, the dispersion was filtered through a 0.45 µg membrane filter. The undiluted filtrate and the dilutions 1:2.2, 1:4.6, 1:10 and 1:22 were used as test media. Additionally, a control was tested in parallel.
At the start of the test, the measured concentration of the test item in the analyzed test medium of the highest test concentration (undiluted filtrate) amounted to 8.8 µg/L. At the end of the test, the measured concentration slightly decreased to 7.0 µg/L. The mean measured test item concentration was calculated to be 7.9 µg/L (geometric mean over the measurements at the start and the end of the test).
The biological results were related to the loading rate of 1000 mg/L (mean measured 7.9 µg/l).


The test item had no statistically significant inhibitory effect on the growth (yield and growth rate) of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata during the test period of 72 hours up to and including the highest loading rate of 100 mg/L (results of Dunnett's tests, one-side, α=0.05). Consequently, the 72-hour NOEC was determined to be at least the loading rate of 100 mg/L or higher, but loading rates above 100 mg/L were not tested in accordance with the EU Commission Directive 92/69/EEC. The 72-hour LOEC was determined to be higher than the loading rate of 100 mg/. 


The 72-hour EC10 and EC50 for the algal growth rate (µ) and yield (y) were clearly higher than the loading rate of 100 mg/L. These values could not be quantified, since the test item had no toxic effect on the algae up to the highest test item concentration which could be dissolved in the test water at a loading rate of 100 mg/L.
