Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Ashes (residues), coal did not show any toxic effect highest tested loading and is not harmful to fish.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Acute toxicity of a ashes (residues), coal (SiO2 42%) to fish was tested in a GLP-study according to OECD TG 203. A limit test with a loading rate of 100 mg/L was performed on Poecilia reticulata. After 96 h of exposure no mortality was observed. Based on this loading rate a NOELR of 100 mg/L (nominal value) was determined. As no mortality could be observed the LL50 is defined to be > 100 mg/L (ČEZ Energetické produkty, a. s.,2008).

This result is supported by studies of Vazelle (1993), who tested the acute toxicity of leachates obtained from ashes according to the French NFT 90-303 testing guideline, which in principle is similar to the EU Method C.1 (Acute Toxicity for Fish). Undiluted leachates resulted in no mortality on the test species Danio rerio; thus the leachates were determined as not acutely harmful to fish. In conclusion ashes(residues), coal showed no toxicity in the range of water solubility.
