Guidance on Safe Use

First-aid measures

Contact with the hot melt: Cool immediately with plenty of water. Do not remove product crusts which may have formed neither forcibly nor by applying any solvents to the skin involved. In order to obtain medical care for possible burns and for a smooth cleansing of the skin, seek medical advice immediately.

The following information refers to the handling of the product at room temperature.

General advice: Take off all contaminated clothing immediately.

If dusts are inhaled in high concentrations: Take the person into the fresh air and keep him warm, let him rest; if there is difficulty in breathing, medical advice is required.

In case of skin contact: In case of skin contact wipe off mechanically and wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and plenty of water. Consult a doctor in the event of a skin reaction.

In case of eye contact: Hold the eyes open and rinse with preferably lukewarm water for a sufficiently long period of time (at least 10 minutes). Contact an ophthalmologist.

If swallowed: DO NOT induce the patient to vomit, medical advice is required.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media: Carbon dioxide (CO2), foam, extinguishing powder, in cases of larger fires, water spray should be used.

Unsuitable extinguishing media: High volume water jet

Firemen must wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

Do not allow contaminated extinguishing water to enter the soil, ground-water or surface waters.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Put on protective equipment (see section on exposure controls / personal protection). Ensure adequate ventilation/exhaust extraction. Keep away ignition sources. Keep unauthorised persons away.

Environmental precautions: Do not allow to escape into waterways, wastewater or soil.

Methods for cleaning up: Cover leaked hot melt with an absorbant, non−flammable

material (Hybilat or sand) and allow to solidify. Collect mechanically. Fill into labelled, sealable containers. Also place used cleaning materials into closable receptacles.

Handling

Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Ensure adequate ventilation and, if necessary, exhaust ventilation when handling or transferring the product. Contact with skin and eyes and inhalation of dust/vapour must be avoided. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Caution: Hot melt! Risk of burns!

Storage

Store in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Keep container dry and tightly closed in a cool and well ventilated place. Keep away from ignition sources.

Remarks:

The substance must be stored in tightly closed containers even for internal transport. Suitable unbreakable packaging, protection against falling and proper labelling according to applicable regulations are required. Opened containers must be closed carefully to avoid spillage. Slight smell. Keep dry and away from foodstuffs, acids and alkalis.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Technical measures: The manufacturer or user has to demonstrate and document that all process steps are performed under Strictly Controlled Conditions as set out in Article 18(4)(a) to (f) of REACH. Local exhaust ventilation is recommended for sampling and (dis)charging operations.

Organisational measures: The manufacturer has to demonstrate and document that all process steps are performed under Strictly Controlled Conditions as set out in Article 18(4)(a) to (f) of REACH. The substance is only available to industrial users and is not made available to the 'do-it-yourself' market. Persons who suffer from skin complaints or other hypersensitivity reactions of skin should not work with the product.

Respiratory protection: Using a respirator with gas filter A3 (color code brown) is required for vapours containing up to 1 % vol of the substance. A respirator with independent air supply is required at higher concentrations or under uncertain conditions.

Hand protection: Wearing of permeation resistant gloves is required. According to DIN EN 374-3 heat-resistant aluminised gloves, resistant to 1000°C, have to be used when handling the melt. According to DIN EN 374-3  the following gloves should be used if the substance is handled at room temperature: Laminate glove - PE/EVOH/PE; breakthrough time >=480 min. Conditionally suitable materials are: Butyle rubber - IIR: thickness: >=0.5 mm; fluorinated rubber - FKM; thickness: >=0.35 mm polyvinyl chloride - PVC; thickness: >=0.5 mm. Breakthrough time of these gloves has not been tested. Disposal of gloves after contamination is recommended.

Eye protection: Wearing of eye/face protection is required. Chemical goggles should be consistent with EN 166 or equivalent.

Skin and body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing.

Hygiene measures: Keep away from foodstuffs, drinks and tobacco. Wash hands before breaks and at end of work and use skin-protecting ointment. Keep work clothes separate. Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Wash thoroughly after open handling of the product.

Stability and reactivity

Thermal decomposition: At temperatures of above approx. 150 °C phenol splits off.

Hazardous decomposition products: No hazardous decomposition products when stored and handled correctly. Formation of phenol and phenol−derivatives in the event of fire or during thermal decomposition.

Hazardous reactions: No hazardous reaction when used as directed.

Further information: Is supplied at above 100 °C. Hot melt! Risk of burns!

Disposal considerations

Dispose in accordance with applicable international, national and local laws, ordinances and statutes. For disposal within the EC, the appropriate code according to the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) should be used.
