Description of key information

Instead of conducting new tests with the substance, available data on the constituents of the reaction mass of calcium carbonate, calcium dihydroxide and silicon dioxide were used to evaluate the corrosive/irritating potential of the substance. Whereas no data is available showing an irritating or corrosive potency of calcium carbonate or silicon dioxide, several sources confirmed that calcium hydroxide is to be considered irritating to the skin and respiratory tract and corrosive to the eyes.

Justification for classification or non-classification

 The typical concentration of calcium dihydroxide is 38%. Considering that calcium hydroxide warrants a classification as corrosive to eyes and irritant to the skin and respiratory tract the following classification of the reaction mass of calcium carbonate, calcium dihydroxide and silicon dioxide is considered justified:

- Eye damage cat. 1 (H318 – Causes serious eye damage)

- Skin irritation cat. 2 (H315- Causes skin irritation)

- STOT SE 3 (H335 – May cause respiratory irritation)
