Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The ready biodegradability of two structural analogues of the target substance was determined with non-adapted activated sludge in the Manometric Respirometry Test according to OECD 301F  for a period of 28 days. Both source chemicals were classified as not readily biodegradable within 28 days.
For source chemical 1 both test item replicates reached the 10 % level (beginning of biodegradation) within 1 day, but the 60 % pass level was not reached within 28 days. After 28 days the mean biodegradation was 40 %. For source chemical 2 both replicates reached the 10 % level (beginning of biodegradation) within 2 days, but did not reach the 60 % pass level within 28 days. After 28 days the mean biodegradation was 25 %. The validity criteria of the guideline are fulfilled

Additional information

The hydrolysis products are believed to be identical for all substances due to identical number and structural vicinity of relevant functional groups. Therefore a similar degradation process in water will take place. Methanol formed by hydrolysis is readily biodegradable and the observed degree of biodegradation is largely allocated to methanol. Degradation of other fragments is slow and may decrease with increasing partition coefficient. It can therefore be assumed that the target substance will be not readily biodegradable as well.
