Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: OECD 105
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
adapted for n-Octanol
Principles of method if other than guideline:
For substances that are completely miscible with octanol, the numerical value of the octanol solubility should be derived from the density. Together with the water solubility this can be used to estimate logP values. The method is not applicable to substances that are completely miscible with both water and octanol.
GLP compliance:
no

Details on results:
Solubility of octadec-9-en-1-amine in n-octanol is 813 g/L.

Any other information on results incl. tables

Following mixtures of oleylamine and n-octanol were prepared at room temperature (23 °C):

10 ml n-octanol + 1 ml oleylamine: clear solution

10 ml n-octanol + 10 ml oleylamine: clear solution

5 ml n-octanol + 10 ml oleylamine: clear solution

1 ml n-octanol + 10 ml oleylamine: clear solution

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
From this result it can be concluded that oleylamine and n-octanol are miscible at every ratio. Thus, the density is used as the maximum solubility in n-Octanol.

The thermodynamics of solutions usually works with concentrations expressed as amount of substance per unit volume of solution. In the case of complete miscibility, the maximum concentration is the pure substance. As a result the numerical value of the solubility is given by the density expressed in g/L.
Executive summary:

The solubility of the test substance tetradecylamine in n-octanol was determined according to the OECD TG 105, using the shake-flask method. Solubility in n-octanol is 813 g/L.
