Description of key information

A sample of diesel fuel was tested in a 'read-across' acute algal toxicity study. The 72hr EL50 was determined to be 10 mg/L, with a NOEC of 3 mg/L.

Supporting PETROTOX (version 4.01) modelled values are available. PETROTOX computer model, which combines a partitioning model (used to calculate the aqueous concentration of hydrocarbon components as a function of substance loading) with the Target Lipid Model (used to calculate acute and chronic toxicity of non-polar narcotic chemicals). PETROTOX computes toxicity based on the summation of the aqueous-phase concentrations of hydrocarbon block(s) that represent a petroleum substance and membrane-water partition coefficients (KMW) that describe the partitioning of the hydrocarbons between the water and organism.

The model predicted the LL50 of the substance for P. subcapitata to be 9.35 mg/L and EL10, 0.28 mg/L.

QSAR predictions on toxicity to aquatic algae of EC 941 -364 -9 have also been provided to support the read-across.
