The short term toxicity of the test material to the aquatic invertebrate, Daphnia magna, was investigated in a study which was conducted under GLP conditions and in accordance with the standardised guidelines OECD 202, EU Method C.2, ISO 6341 and OECD 23.

During the study twenty Daphnia per test group (4 vessels, 5 Daphnia per vessel) were exposed to a blank-control and a 0.45 µm filtered solution prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/L. In addition, ten Daphnia per test group (2 vessels, 5 per vessel) were exposed to dilutions containing .0 and 10% of the filtrate. The total test period was 48 hours and samples for analyses of actual exposure concentrations were taken at the start and the end of the test period.

Analysis of the samples taken from the filtrate prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/L showed that the measured concentration during the 48-hour test period remained stable at 28 mg/L. The low lithium background measured in samples from the blank-control originated from lithium traces present in the purified water used for preparation of the test medium and this did not affect the exposure of daphnia or the study integrity.

Under the conditions of the study the test material did not induce acute immobilisation of Daphnia magna at 28 mg/L, being the average concentration measured in a 0.45 µm filtered solution prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/L (NOEC). The 48h-EC50 based on actual measured concentrations exceeded 28 mg/L, being the expected maximum soluble concentration in test medium.
