Verification of the viscometer

According to the manufacturer, the viscosity of the standard (mineral oil, Cannon N350) at 20°C and 40°C was 829.6 cP and 258.4 cP, respectively. At 1.0 rpm and 20°C, the viscosity of the standard for the 2 replicates was 843.0 cP and 840.0 cP respectively, while at 2.0 rpm the values were 834.0 cP and 828.0 cP, respectively. At 40°C the results were 261.0 cP and 264.0 cP at 1.0 rpm and 252.0 cP and 261.0 cP at 2.0 rpm. The viscosities of all replicates fell within the calculated viscosity ranges for their respective rotations per minute values and temperatures (see below). Therefore, the instrument was operating correctly and accurately.

Required viscosity ranges:

At 20°C: 792 - 868 cP (at 1.0 rpm) and 807 - 853 cP (at 2.0 rpm)

At 40°C: 225 - 291 cP (at 1.0 rpm) and 240 - 276 cP (at 2.0 rpm)

Conclusions:
The viscosity of the test substance at 20.0 °C was determined to be 1031 ± 3 cP (mPa.s) at 1.0 rpm and 1033 ± 4 cP at 2.0 rpm, while at 40.0°C the values were 263 ± 2 cP at 1.0 rpm and 257.3 ± 1.1 cP at 2.0 rpm.
The test substance, HSO 10, was determined to be a Newtonian fluid, since the viscosity of the fluid did not significantly vary with the rpm of the viscometer.

Description of key information

One key study is available for this endpoint, in which the viscosity of the test substance was determined to be:
at 20.0°C: 1031 ± 3 cP at 1.0 rpm and 1033 ± 4 cP at 2.0 rpm
at 40.0°C: 263 ± 2 cP at 1.0 rpm and 257.3 ± 1.1 cP at 2.0 rpm
As a key value for the chemical safety assessment, the mean viscosity obtained at 20.0°C can be taken, i.e. 1032 cP.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Viscosity:
1 032 mPa · s (dynamic)
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The viscosity of the test substance was determined in a rotational viscometer according to OECD guideline 114. At 20°C the viscosity was determined to be 1031 ± 3 cP (mPa.s) at 1.0 rpm and 1033 ± 4 cP at 2.0 rpm, while at 40°C the values were 263 ± 2 cP at 1.0 rpm and 257.3 ± 1.1 cP at 2.0 rpm. The test substance, HSO 10, was determined to be a Newtonian fluid, since the viscosity of the fluid did not significantly vary with the rpm of the viscometer.
