Study period:
Nov. - Dec. 2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
Method A.10 Flammability (Solids) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.
Deviations:
no

Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

The test item melted and began to boil when the Bunsen flame was applied. A small amount of grey fumes were released but the rope failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. Therefore, the test item has been determined to be not highly flammable as it did not propagate combustion over the 200 mm of the preliminary screening test.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item melted and began to boil when the Bunsen flame was applied. A small amount of grey fumes were released but the rope failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. Therefore, the test item has been determined to be not highly flammable as it did not propagate combustion over the 200 mm of the preliminary screening test.
Executive summary:

The test item, fatty acids, tall-oil, reaction products with acrylic acid potassium salt, was formed into a rope (approximately 250 mm long with a cross section of 1 cm²) on a non-combustible, non-porous board. An air-rich Bunsen burner flame was applied to one end of the rope for two minutes. The test item melted and began to boil when the Bunsen flame was applied. A small amount of grey fumes were released but the rope failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. Therefore, the substance has been determined to be not highly flammable as it did not propagate combustion over the 200 mm of the preliminary screening test. Further investigations were not required according to guideline.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance was assessed for flammability according to EU method A.10 for flammable solids and was found not being flammable. Thus, the substance is not subject to classification for flammability in accordance with CLP (Regulation EC No 1272/2008). From experience in handling and use it is known, that the substance is stable in air and does not react with water forming flammable gases. Therefore, classification for forming flammable gases in contact with water and pyrophoricity is also not required according to CLP.
